Anthony McAlister has felt like a nobody for too long.
He’d once had dreams, ambitions of becoming someone the world
would remember. Now at age 36, he stacks boxes at a warehouse,
a low-paying and embarrassing position. Anthony’s one remaining
joy comes from his martial arts training and even that has been
rotten lately, until he finds the book: an ancient martial arts spell
book, to be exact, one tied to the murder/suicide of its last two
possessors. Its human authors were “inspired” (more like,
“manipulated”) into writing it by Ho Gwai, the demon who persuaded
the infamous Boxers to slaughter tens of thousands at the dawn of
the Twentieth Century.
Ho Gwai offers Anthony a chance to finally be somebody, and
Anthony, who’s been in the habit of letting life just “happen,” finds
he can’t say “no.” Soon, due to the amazing martial prowess
instilled in him by Ho Gwai, Anthony is somebody … somebody with
even less control than before. Someone in danger of losing his
life… and even his very soul.
